Walnuts in handWhy you should add a handful of delicious Australian walnuts to your study plan

If you are one of the tens of thousands of Australian high school or University students facing the end of the academic year, you’re probably living with some familiar symptoms of exam stress. Stress affects all of the people around you too. Your family and friends will get front-row seats to all of your stress related behaviours in full HD, over the next few weeks.

As it turns out, there’s a simple way to maximise your study time, which will hopefully minimise your stress to help achieve a great result – and the best news, it’s well within your grasp!

Latest research suggests just a handful of walnuts a day can boost memory, deliver enhanced mental stamina, concentration and improve the speed at which your brain processes information.

According to recent research from the David Geffen School of Medicine at The University of California, Los Angeles, led by Dr. Lenore Arab, the participants who ate more walnuts performed better on a series of six cognitive tests.

So why are Walnuts so beneficial? It may have something to do with:

  1. Walnuts have a significantly high concentration of ALA, a plant-based Omega-3 fatty acid. ALA is the precursor or ‘parent’ to two important omega-3s – DHA and EPA. Research has shown that ALA can help reduce inflammation, an important factor in the development of disease.
  2. Walnuts have almost twice as many antioxidants as other commonly consumed nuts such as almonds, peanuts, and pistachios. Antioxidants are crucial to your health, as they are believed to combat free radicals, which are at the heart of age-related deterioration.
  3. They’re also rich in melatonin, which encourages a good night’s sleep. Melatonin is also an antioxidant, improving our body’s ability to resist oxidative stress.

The findings add to a growing body of research surrounding walnuts’ benefits on brain health.

And the best part is locally grown, delicious Australian Walnuts are easy to find and a great value for money brain food.
